Batch vs Always-On Electricity: Same 28-Day Window

Compare food-waste appliance electricity over the same number of days and a similar food load. For a batch machine, multiply energy per cycle by expected cycles. For an always-powered or scheduled retained system, use its daily or monthly figure over that same window. One batch versus one day is not a fair comparison.

Put every claim on a 28-day calendar

Natridy publishes ~1 kWh per 4-hour reference cycle. Monthly energy therefore depends on how often the household runs that reference cycle.

These are arithmetic examples, not household promises. Actual use can differ by mode, load, and operation. The value is that the cycle assumption stays visible.

Mill publishes a different denominator

Mill estimates typical use at around 0.7 kWh per day, averaged over multiple weeks across Mill Plus devices. It says actual daily use can be higher or lower depending on cycle frequency, food volume, and moisture.

Using Mill's published estimate over 28 days gives 19.6 kWh. That is a maker-reported estimate, not an independent same-load comparison with Natridy.

FoodCycler shows why model names matter

FoodCycler’s FAQ lists average cycle energy as 0.9 kWh for Eco 3 and 1.5 kWh for Eco 5. Its Eco 5 specification block separately lists consumption below 1.5 kWh per cycle, so the page does not present one consistent figure for that model. The larger model and the smaller model cannot be represented by one generic FoodCycler number.

The same rule applies across the category: identify model, mode, load basis, and measurement window. Do not copy a number from an older model or compare a per-cycle claim with a per-day estimate.

Electricity per day is not electricity per pound

A household can use less electricity while processing less food. Another can use more electricity while preventing more wet material from waiting indoors. To compare efficiency rather than the utility bill alone, record:

  • wet input mass over the period;
  • broad input recipe and moisture;
  • completed cycles or scheduled events;
  • measured appliance kWh;
  • dry output mass; and
  • where that output goes.

Without input and endpoint, kWh alone describes consumption, not service delivered.

Always powered does not mean full power all day

A continuous-retention appliance may remain powered while fans, sensors, mixing, drying, or other functions operate at different times and levels. "Always on" describes the ownership state, not a claim that rated power is drawn continuously.

Batch control is a choice, not an automatic saving

A batch owner chooses when to run. Waiting for an appropriate supported load can avoid unnecessary small cycles. Running every day regardless of load can erase that advantage.

Convert energy to cost carefully

Multiply kWh by the electricity rate on your own bill: estimated operating cost = kWh over the period × local price per kWh.

Do not use a national average as if it were your tariff. Time-of-use pricing, taxes, fees, and local currency can change the result. Keep energy and cost as separate rows so a changing rate does not rewrite the appliance measurement.

Does Natridy always use exactly 1 kWh? The published figure is ~1 kWh per 4-hour reference cycle. The tilde matters: it is an approximate reference, not a guarantee for every input, mode, or operating condition. Use a plug-in energy meter and a batch log if you need household-specific data.

Is Mill's 0.7 kWh per day independently verified? Mill presents it as an estimate based on real-world conditions and an average across Mill Plus devices. Treat it as a manufacturer-published fleet estimate. A controlled comparison would use the same food recipe, mass, period, and output endpoint across machines.

Which uses less energy, batch or always-on? There is no architecture-only answer. A batch result depends on cycles and load. A retained-system result depends on its scheduled operation, food volume, moisture, and background functions. Put both on the same 28-day window and measure the food handled before choosing a winner.

Should I run a batch machine only when full? Follow the product's supported loading range and do not exceed its working limit.
